An exceptional pair of Georgian sterling silver open salt cellars, assayed in London in 1792,It has been 233 years since now. during the reign of King George III. Each piece is fully hallmarked with the lion passant, crowned leopard’s head for London, date letter “r” (1792), and the duty mark of George III. The maker’s mark “PB / AB” identifies the celebrated silversmiths Peter & Ann Bateman, members of the renowned Bateman family of London.

The Bateman family—Hester Bateman, followed by her children Peter, Ann, and Jonathan—were among the most important English silversmiths of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Their works are admired for fine craftsmanship, elegant Georgian style, and historical significance. Pieces bearing their marks are highly sought after by collectors worldwide.

This pair of salt cellars stands on three cabriole legs and retains their gilt interiors, designed to resist salt corrosion and add a warm golden glow. A fine example of late 18th-century English silver tableware.
